While Work Manager requires SMP it does not store any data in the SMP server layer. There is no intermediate data server as Work Manager directly synchronizes with ECC. SMP is there to manage the interaction between the client and the back end so that the clients do not require direct access to the ECC backend (makes the security folks happier) and to offload some of the processing but no data is stored there
